在美国英语中是什么意思，俚语英语是非正式的口语表达，比如我们old dog不是说老狗，表示老头儿，old cat不是说老猫二叔老太太，confidence man不是说自信的男人，而是骗子的意思等等。
今天我们学习一个跟动物相关的单词rat,相信都认识表示老鼠的意思，rat 美 [ræt] 鼠,学习一个俚语I smell a rat ，字面意思为我闻到一只老鼠，记住千万不要这样翻译，这句话的意思是感觉什么事情不正常、奇怪、不对头的意思。用英语解释就是 feel that something is wrong。
smell a rat察觉到不对劲 觉得可疑；觉得可疑了；感到不妙，举个例子：Every time I saw her, my necklace disappeared. I\’m beginning to smell a rat.每次看到她，我的项链都会消失。我开始疑心了。
俚语虽然用语非正式口语，但是在口语中是非常活跃的口语，平时多积累些对我们交流口语是很有帮助的

过去式是smelled/smelt。过去分词是smelled/smelt。现在分词是smelling。第三人称单数是smells。
作名词的意思是气味；嗅觉；嗅。
作动词的意思是嗅；闻；散发气味；有臭味；察觉。
短语：
1、bear the smell 受得了这种气味
2、give off a smell 散发一种气味
3、give out a smell 散发一种气味
4、have a smell 有一种气味
5、stand the smell 受得了这种气味
6、take a smell 闻一闻
