1、祖父祖母，是指爷爷的父母。比如在我们四川，父亲的父母，就爷爷、奶奶；爷爷的父母，是祖父、祖母，通常叫“祖祖”；奶奶的父母，是外祖父、外祖母，通常叫“外祖祖”。
2、祖父祖母，是指爷爷奶奶。但很多时候，祖父祖母一般是书面语言，爷爷（姥爷）、奶奶（姥姥）是口语化，二者是等同的概念，这也与英文中相同。爷爷（姥爷）grandfather、grandpa；奶奶（姥姥）grandmother、grandma；祖父母grandparents。
